This acrylic painting has possibilities. It started as me just swiping the brush across the canvas with paint left over from Five Friends. Aimlessly sketching again. I figure the more I have a pen or pencil or crayon to paper, the more opportunities the inspiration will have to take over or lead me somewhere. Aimless creating isn't waste of time. It's a form of exercise for the imagination. It too needs regular exercise. This is one of those hollow core indoor doors. I tore off the inner core and flimsy side to make it lighter. Then I covered it in gesso. This is my next canvas. My intention is to use it for a work I am doing for the pediatric wing at Avera McKennan Hospital in memory of my daughter Maggie. I think it is going to be a bunch of animals and kids. We'll see where it leads me.

Doing some more random sketches. What is going on in my life affects my sketching. Right now I feel my imagination is sleeping. But she'll wake up eventually. So, I couldn't find my fountain pens last night or today so I am using different stuff to draw with. This is a good thing really (though I am still missing my pens badly -- like emotionally....I depend on them I guess).
Here are some of my silly doodles (used all sorts of stuff with these drawings: pencil, colored pencils, pastels and oil pastels...well, not all of this with all of them . . . and i just used the iPad to take the pics...maybe i ought to use the scanner): This is a figure made out of masking tape and wire (and a bit of duct tape and tin foil). We'll see where she goes. She is oddly compelling when she's in your presence. Still working on this. It is a bit odd but it too is oddly compelling....
Ruthie and Marcie is almost done!
I'm quite excited about it. It has totally gone in directions I never imagined. My kids are loving it (though they aren't the most objective listeners). I wanted to share with you some of the names of the chapters I've recently written. Chapter 8 is called Mustache. Chapter 9 is called The Brick. Chapter 10 is called The Ogre on Oak Street. Chapter 11 is called Tuna Fish and cookies. Then we'll skip to the ones I've written the last two days. They are: Chapter 17 is called A Few People Faint. Chapter 18 is called Alice. Let's skip a few. Chapter 21 is called A Pink Bathrobe. Chapter 22 is called She was followed. Chapter 23 is called From Above. Chapter 24 is called Inside the witch's lair. I hope to finish it over the weekend. I think there are probably three more chapters. Some of the chapters are very short. None are very long. I'm seeing this as a book for elementary students, maybe around second and third grade (though my 5th graders are loving it). I'm hopeful. Honestly, I've started so many books in the past -- books I hope to complete one day. I am going to be quite honest right now -- a dream of mine is to not only be an author-illustrator, but to actually supplement my family's income in a significant way with my skills. God takes care of us. He always does and He always will. And if ever I see my dream come true it will no doubt be totally God. Only He can make it happen, but I so want to be part of it. I want to help my family meet some of its needs. I want to take my husband on a trip one day to Ireland. I want to be able to pay all our bills on time. I want to help lots of people -- more than I can now. I want to see the ocean again. I want to have my cupboards overflowing with food, my refrigerator overflowing with fresh produce. Yum. I want to visit friends. I want to take Maggie to Bulgaria. I want to go to Africa again. I want to see the Redwoods. I want to go to San Fransisco. I want to go to New Zealand! But mainly I want to see all my kids learn to be content in Jesus Christ and be the people they were created to be. Wow. That will be incredible!!!!!!! I will see that happen. The rest is just gravy. ![]() Check out the villains in Ruthie and Marcie's story. They look like ordinary people but appearances can be deceiving. Top let is their leader, Alice. Beside Alice is Tommy. Below them are Richard and Henry. The story is progressing quite nicely actually. I think I'm on chapter 14. My kids are enjoying it and I will keep writing it until it is finished because I want to know what happens too! I do so hope to sell it. Man, our finances are in bad shape. And they seem to daily get worse. God is in charge. He is a great God. He is a great provider. But the numbers sure look awful right now! I particularly like Alice. She had to be pretty but nasty at the same time. I realize as I look at her that she looks like she is doing crude gesture. She isn't. She's pointing to the cat in the box....if you click on it you can see that better. But I wouldn't put it past her to do such a thing (though I won't let her -- gotta restrain those characters a little bit .....within reason that is. She did already want to torture a cat. She ends up just putting him in a wooden box and sitting on the lid. But still she wasn't opposed to her boys pulling out the cat's fur. ![]() Ruthie has a dragon!. Well, not quite yet but I'm working on it. Here are three dragons I began yesterday (plus an elephant with a headband). I haven't found Ruthie's dragon yet but he'll appear (or it might be a girl dragon...yes, it probably will be). I'm quite excited about these stories I'm writing about Ruthie and Marcie. They are fun to write my kids love them (though this is often not a good indication of anything because my kids are great fans of mine). In the shower I figured out Marcie's dog's name. It is Stinkhead. The kids will like them. Hawk and I are reading a book about Roald Dahl written by a friend of his. He writes that Dahl said kids' books must be funny. So, we shall try (though not hard -- it's gotta play out on its own. Ruthie already defied me, her creator -- uh oh - - I just heard her say she wasn't created. She was born! -- but anyway, I had to follow where the characters took me). |
